Dane Park Bowling Club
Dane Park Bowling Club, in their centenary year of 2022, chose to fundraise for a defibrillator unit to be installed in Dane Park, accessible to all 24/7 and linked to the National Network, The Circuit.
Our open season only lasts from April to September every year and we are a small Bowling Club, but in this very short span of time – 6 months – we raised enough funding to install an up-to-date unit for all of the Community to use, if needed.
With the help of the London Hearts Charity grant of £300 towards the whole unit and a donation of £200 from the former Zipper Club members group, we raised over £1200. This included nearly £200 local donations raised from our Just Giving page.
The unit was installed by some of our club members on our boundary fence at the end of our Centenary year and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone one who contributed to this great Community asset – free for anyone in need to use.
Dane Park Bowling Club have pledged to train any of our members or friends to use the unit and we have received online training free as part of our package from London Hearts.

Since the unit was installed and registered with The Circuit, it has already been selected twice by people in need of help in the local vicinity.
In these difficult times, when money is very tight and people are struggling it is so heartening to see the Community coming together and contributing to this fantastic cause.
As the Bowling Club enters our second Century, we are encouraging everyone to come along and have a look at outdoor green bowling to see if it is an activity they might like to try! We re-open on Saturday April 1 st from 2pm and will be offering our free Come and Have a go sessions on Wednesdays from 4pm. If our doors are open, come on in any time – we are an all-inclusive Bowling Club, whose members range from 12 to 90+
Planning to continue to develop in the future, our next target is to make the green accessible to all!

Birchington Man Shed
We are going to focus on parts of the wood working section. Nearly all of the machines and tools we have at the shed have been donated from local people and businesses and we cannot thank you enough. A couple of our members are skilled craftsmen and know how to use these machines. They are only too pleased to pass their knowledge, learnt over a lifetime of work, onto the other members.
Whether it’s one of the two lathes we have or the scroll saws, table and band saws or routers, they know all about them. This in turn enables the less skilled of us to undertake more and more complicated pro- jects as we learn. None of us had met before so joining the Man Shed has really created a camaraderie that men need when their working lives are over. Our age range is the youngest at 61 to Sonny who has just celebrated his 91st birthday.
As we are a non profit making venture, living off grants, donations and members’ subs we have to sell whatever we make. Any item the members make are either sold in our outlet centre or the member can buy the item themselves. Nothing is free in this world and we have to keep bringing money in to stay afloat. No income –no rent– no Man Shed. The donations people so kindly give are not given to an individual but to the Man Shed as a whole to benefit older retired men in our community. Some of the items we are making are bird boxes, hedgehog houses, chopping boards, rocking horses and turning gonks on the lathe. We have other attractions beside woodwork.
If you would like to have a go at any of these projects, all you have to do is come along and join. Not only do you become more confident learning how to use the tools and machinery, you enjoy the friendship created and have the satisfaction someone is going to pay good money for your work of art. It can be very rewarding.
One of our members suggested we make our own pens. General opinion was that it is a good idea. We looked into what was needed and went ahead and bought the kit required to turn a pen. We already have the smaller lathe so once these are made they will also be on sale too.

Mayor of Ramsgate
Friday 27 January, Holocaust Memorial Service at St Mark’s Church, Ramsgate.
On Holocaust Memorial Day thousands of people from across the country come together to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution of other groups and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
In Ramsgate there will be a special memorial service at St Mark’s Church. The Mayor of Ramsgate, Councillor Raushan Ara will host this event and will be joined by representatives from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities.
The theme for HMD 2023 is Ordinary People.
The theme highlights the ordinary people who let genocide happen, the ordinary people who actively perpetrated genocide, the ordinary people who became rescuers during genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted. You can explore it further here

Local history appeal
I’m trying to obtain historical photos of Ellington Place up to the 1980s. I need copy photos of Ellington Place near the junction with Grange Road. I believe that there used to be a cottage or house adjacent to Chapel Cottage in Grange Road, opposite Chantry House which was demolished many years ago, but I can’t locate any photos of what the building next to Chapel Cottage looked like and when it was demolished. I’d be really grateful for help.

Mummy to Mummy Fairs

Pilgrims Hospices
Come wind rain or shine, the doorstep collections of Christmas trees took place over two weekends, 6th – 9th January and 14th – 16th January. More than 3,150 real Christmas trees were collected by Pilgrims Hospices in Ashford, Canterbury and Thanet and recycled by volunteers and representatives of Pilgrims. The generous community donations raised an incredible £57,000 for local hospice care, exceeding the total from last year, by more than £10,000.
Supporters have been helping Pilgrims to take care of the planet, and hospice patients, one tree at a time, through generous donations given by members of the community as part of this environmentally-friendly fundraising initiative, which reached a milestone 11 years in Ashford and last year ‘branched out’ in Canterbury and Thanet.
Pilgrims wish to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported their charity fundraising scheme. Together, your support helps the hospices to continue providing skilled and compassionate end-of-life care to people living with a life-limiting illness across east Kent.
Kate Duddell, Pilgrims Hospices Fundraising Manager said: “We can only provide the tree recycling service to the local community with the invaluable support of our much-loved and dedicated volunteers who donate their time, vehicles and services for local hospice care, we just couldn’t do it without them. We think you are all amazing!”
Kate added: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who registered their tree for collection, each and every donation makes a difference to the £11 million we have to fundraise each year in order to keep our services running.
“Our thanks also go to our campaign partners; Kent County Council and FCC Environment and all the staff at the Recycling Centres. Additionally, a very special thanks goes to Ashford Borough Council for their many dedicated years supporting the campaign, Canterbury City Council and Thanet District Council. Also, A. Each year, Pilgrims Hospices provide care and comfort to thousands of people in east Kent who are coming to terms with an illness that sadly cannot be cured. The charity support patients to live life as well as possible until the end of life, free from pain and distress.
Martha Trust
Creativity and sense of fun is behind every one of Martha Trust’s fundraising events and their annual car challenge is no exception. On 9th September 2023, teams are headed, for Barcelona in their fundraising adventure – Bonkers in Barcelona. Long-term supporters of Martha, The King’s Head in Deal, are once again taking part.
James Stiles from the King’s Head in Deal said “Sam and I are taking part in this year’s Bonkers in Barcelona because not only is it great fun and a bit of a challenge but also gives us a chance to personally raise money for such a great local charity. There is a real sense of camaraderie on Martha’s car challenges, its a really fun experience!!
The charity, which supports adults with profound disabilities at their homes in Deal, Kent and Hastings, East Sussex, is looking for teams to join their adventure.
The intrepid teams will set off from Dover on Saturday 9th September driving across Europe to arrive in Barcelona on Monday 11th September, you then fly home on Tuesday 12th September. All the usual rules apply, you’ll need a car, which they ask that you try and source for less than £500 (although any cars are welcome), with tax, insurance, MOT and that is eligible for a Crit’Air sticker. Martha organise your channel crossing, accommodation and flight home and in return, they ask you to pledge to raise a minimum of £1,500 per car of two to help transform the lives of people with profound disabilities.
Julie Gayler, CEO of Martha Trust and a team member of the Martha car, said “The annual car challenge is such a great event to be involved in. Driving an old banger through Europe is a real adventure and you meet some wonderful people, enjoy some breath-taking scenery and help to raise thousands of pounds for a really good cause. We are very excited to be setting off for Barcelona this September.”
Bonkers in Barcelona is only made possible with the generous support of the main sponsors Agilico, Nick Cunningham Plumbing and Heating Engineers and Sota, Their support ensures as much of the individual car sponsorship as possible goes towards the work Martha Trust does transforming the lives of people with profound disabilities.
This year will be the 14th time the charity had organised such a challenge, and in that time they’ve raised in excess of £314,000!

My other half took part in this years Pilgrims Hospice Xmas tree collection and I can’t believe that they raised so much money for the charity from this environmentally friendly collection .
£57 thousand pounds is a lot of money ,£10K more than last year.
