A new Aldi store at Westwood opened its doors to customers this morning (November 24) with Team GB Hockey hero Grace Balsdon cutting the red ribbon alongside pupils from Dame Janet Primary School.

The Margate Road store is the first Aldi to open in Westwood and will be run by store manager Thomas Drury, along with a team of colleagues from the community. Aldi has recruited 15 staff for the store.

Team GB bronze medallist Grace Balsdon gave away complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue, before delivering an assembly for pupils of Dame Janet Primary.

She also talked to pupils about her experience of competing as an Olympian and shared her challenging training regime.

Aldi Westwood also offered pupils the opportunity to win a £20 gift voucher to spend at the new store. Children were tasked with creating a poster to show what healthy eating means to them. Grace announced the winner during the assembly and the pupil was presented with their voucher.

Thomas Drury said: “It’s been a wonderful morning here at the opening of Aldi Westwood. It was lovely to welcome our new customers into store, and I look forward to meeting more of the community in the coming weeks. I’m also thrilled that we’ve been able to support Dame Janet Primary School through our partnership with Team GB.”

Team GB star Grace Balsdon added: “I’ve had a fantastic time opening the new Aldi this morning. It was an honour to officially open the store and welcome customers inside for the first time.

“It was great to speak with the children at Dame Janet Primary School about the importance of eating healthily and how it can be fun to plan and prepare meals as a family. Hopefully I’ve also managed to inspire the pupils to keep active and try different sports.”

The new Aldi store  is calling on local charities and food banks in the Broadstairs area to register with Neighbourly, a community engagement platform that links businesses to charitable organisations.

Local charities that register will be able to collect surplus food and perishable products, such as fruit, vegetables and baked goods, up to seven days a week. Any charities in the area that would like to partner up with the new Aldi store should email [email protected].

The new store at 452 Margate Road, Westwood Gateway Retail Park, will be open Monday – Saturday: 8:00am – 22:00 and Sunday: 10:00am – 16:00.

    • Shame Ronaldo at the world Cup. As he’s got nothing else to do at the moment he would of been perfect. Maybe when the next branch opens then.

  1. Great to have another discounter supermarket, use to use sainsburys And tesco in westwood but gave up for some easily sorted problems.
Lidl westwood is ok but why do they allow a begger to sit at the store entrance ?
Going to give aldi a go !

    • I spoke to the “beggar” when last I was at Lidl. He is a homeless chap trying to get enough funds for a nights shelter. He is just a young lad and in need. So much for Christmas spirit (yes I know it’s early)
