King Charles III has been finding out about the hospitality trade in Thanet in a chat with isle pub chain boss Philip Thorley.

Philip, who heads up Thorley Taverns, was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday (November 16) which was held in recognition of the contribution of small businesses to the UK’s economy.

He was among around 400 people representing businesses from across the country who enjoyed the special reception.

He said: “It was a very humbling experience to be invited to Buckingham Palace and to meet the King. It was totally awe inspiring.

“He was very interested in how business was going, about employment and how young people were getting on in the business and if I had enough staff.

“We got on like a house on fire, he was a really nice chap.”

Philip initially kept his invite quiet saying he didn’t want to ‘shout about it’ but was ‘delighted and honoured’ to be a part of the event.

He also revealed that he took the opportunity to invite King Charles to come to Broadstairs for a pint!

  1. King Charles 111 has made it known he supports the reopening of Manston Airport which he and other members of the Royal Family have used many times over the years.

  2. I note that this article chooses the unwieldy phrasing of “King Charles III” or “King Charles”.
We knew his mother as the Queen, so I don’t think it will stretch most readers for him to be referred to simply as the King.
The headline for this story did make me think it was about a pub rather than the monarch.
