Waxing Lyrical with ‘Maria Arty Girl’ at The Front Room gallery

Maria's Waxing Lyrical exhibition

There is still a chance to see a new exhibition by Ramsgate artist Maria Cook – known as Maria Arty Girl.

The 53-year-old has returned to the art scene this year after a break of some 15 years.

She is now holding her second 2022 exhibition at The Front Room gallery in Ramsgate, titled Waxing Lyrical.

The exhibition has been brought together despite Maria being in poor health and due to go into hospital for an operation.

And the artist, who says she was inspired in her drawings as a child by TV personality Tony Hart, has now been invited to show her work at Turner Contemporary next month.

She said: “I’ve  been invited to show my work at Turner Contemporary on October 11 for a one day event. I’ll be bringing a quarter of my life’s work with A Festival of Colours and Waxing Lyrical. It’s going to be fantastic.”

Maria had a helping hand from sister Mags and brother Alf

The mum-of-one, who has lived in Ramsgate for more than a decade after moving from Maidstone to be closer to her mum, trained at Maidstone KIAD before achieving her BA degree in fine arts from Canterbury KIAD in 2007. There then followed a long period when Maria did not exhibit but during the pandemic she began to create works again.

Waxing Lyrical, which also includes a guest spot from artist ‘Regan’ and framing by Maria’s sister Mags, is on show at The Front Room, 10 Bellvue Road until Sunday (September 25). Opening hours are 11am to 5pm.
