Paines Plough Roundabout theatre heads back to Newington with packed programme

Saturday night headliners Lunatraktors

Paines Plough “Roundabout” circular theatre is coming back to Newington this month.

The award-winning, pop-up venue will be premiering three new plays direct from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, alongside a packed programme of locally produced shows, activities, food and fun.

The programme runs from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October.

If you haven’t been to Roundabout before then think Tardis, think space-ship – think the most exciting sound and light show you will ever see – and that’s before the performers are added!

There will be theatre, dance, cabaret, music and family fun beginning on the Thursday evening, with Paines Plough’s production of “Half-Empty Glasses” – an empowering new play by Dipo Baruwa-Etti about Black British history in the school curriculum.

On the Friday the Roundabout theatre will welcome nearly 500 local school children to see Laura Lindow’s play for ages 5+ “The Ultimate Pickle” – all about the importance of stories and imagination, and how young people deal with grief. Family audiences can see the show on the Saturday morning.

Shakespeare

From Friday to Sunday there will be Beverley Balls Bingo and Shakespeare’s Royal Company, Cohesion Plus’s Afro-Bhangra Fusion Group and Saturday night headliners, Margate’s very own broken folk duo Lunatraktors.

Afro Bhangra Fusion

Ticket holders for Mama G’s Storytime Roadshow on Friday will even get a free barbecue!

Screaming Alley has two shows in Roundabout this year – on Friday night they present their trademark eye-popping evening of cheeky cabaret and on Sunday evening they bring cabaret, working with Newington’s own Chill Club.

On Saturday, Nouveau Riche’s Play “CASTE-ING” explores the experiences of three black actresses using beatboxing, rap, song and spoken word,

Inspiration Creative

Inspiration Creative return to the pop-up theatre this year on the Sunday with their show “the Family Feud” – created with Newington Junior Youth Theatre, and based on stories that inspire them.

Roundabout closes on Sunday evening with two theatre shows. A free work-in-progress performance by Mischievous Theatre of “The Showman’s Odyssey” is followed by Paines Plough’s production of “A Sudden Violent Burst of Rain” by Sami Ibrahim.

Roundabout is Paines Plough’s award-winning portable in-the-round auditorium and 2022 will see it return to Thanet for its eighth consecutive year. Visitors are invited to come along to Newington and just look for the big yellow tent.

Ticket prices have been kept low so people can enjoy more than one show. Most tickets are £10, with a £5 concessions price and some shows are just £1 or even free. Special deals are available for Newington residents from the Community Centre.

Roundabout is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and is brought to Newington by Starlings Support CIC, Newington Big Local and Creative Newington supported by Creative Civic Change.

  1. The events look great but I’m sorry to say I can’t afford tickets at £10 for adults and £5 for children. It’s great that it’s free for Newington families but I’m in the town centre and this is also a deprived area for children and families. My husband and I both work and used to love taking our kids to the theatre but just not possible now. Please consider including families from other low income Ramsgate postcodes in future. Thanks

    • Hi Liza, I believe some of the events will be free, perhaps pop on their website and have a look through, fingers crossed you’ll find something good
