Margate’s MiCommunity shop fundraiser for premises move

MiCommunity Shop in Margate

A community shop in Margate which provides cut-priced food and household goods for people on benefits and low wages is planning to move to a bigger premises following a burglary at the current site.

Kent Police received a report that between 7am and 8am on Tuesday 30 August, the premises in Duke Street had been broken into and a number of food and drink items, as well as children’s toys, were stolen.

On Friday 2 September, officers arrested 32-year-old Natalie Lindsay of Dalby Square, Cliftonville, and she was charged the following day with the burglary.

She was further charged in connection with offences reported to have taken place on Thursday 1 September; theft of alcohol from a store in Margate, burglary of a purse containing cash and bank cards from a building, and two counts of bank card fraud.

A 40-year-old woman from Ramsgate was also arrested on Monday 5 September on suspicion of burglary and has been released under investigation.

Now the MiCommunity directors have decided to move and have viewed a new possible venue for both the community shop and their food bank.

John Finnegan, who co-founded Margate Independent Food Bank and then MiCommunity, said: “We have decided to put in an offer. The venue is ideally situated right in the middle of Margate and it will allow us to expand and offer more services.”

To help cover the costs a fundraiser has been launched.

On the fundraising page it says: “We know the rent is going to change, hence the crowdfunder to cover the cost of the rent for one or two years. Plus, it also helps us support more families that are in desperate need of support over the next few years.”

The fundraiser has a target of £24,000.

  1. We took a rare stroll around Margate today, and visited the caves for the first time ever (worth seeing)… anyway, a really excellent bakers has opened in the former Carphone Warehouse premises. It might even be enough to make me visit more often!
