Books of condolences have been opened at sites across Thanet for those wishing to leave their respects following the death of Queen Elizabeth II yesterday (September 8).

For those wishing to leave a message, a book of condolence is placed at the Thanet Gateway Plus building in Margate throughout the official period of mourning. An e-book of condolence will be available on the official Royal website www.royal.uk

In agreement with Birchington Parish Council, flowers and other tributes in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, may be placed at the memorial on Dog Acre Birchington (bottom of Station Road). A book of condolence will be in the foyer of the Village Centre, Alpha Road, opening times 9am to 6pm.

A Book of Condolence is available for signing at WS Cole Funeral Directors, High Street, Minster. Floral tributes can be laid on the grass adjacent to the flagpole.

St. Luke’s Church in Ramsgate will be open 12-6pm on Friday and 10-6pm on Saturday. There will be a book of condolence available for people to fill in.

A Book of Condolence will be opened at The Customs House, Ramsgate, from Monday 12th September (10am – 4pm) throughout the official period of mourning, there will also be a Book of Condolence at St. George’s Church in Church Hill.

St Peter’s Church, Broadstairs, will be open from 10am until 6pm today for people to come in, sit quietly, light a candle, and say some prayers. There will also be an opportunity to sign a Book of Condolence. The bells will be tolled today for one hour (muffled) at 12noon.

St. Andrew’s Church in Reading Street is open this evening from 5.30pm to 6.30pm for anyone who wishes to light a candle and pray to commemorate the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Broadstairs and St Peter’s Town Council say if residents wish to lay flowers, they invite them to do so at the Victorian lamppost in front of Pierremont Hall. Please remove the wrapping. A book of condolence will be open in the town council chamber from Monday (12/09/22). Please call ahead to make an appointment – 01843 868718

St Paul’s Church in Cliftonville has opened a book of condolence, the church is open until 4pm.

St John’s Church, Margate is open from 10am to 4pm tomorrow, (September 10), as part of Heritage Open Days. There will also be a chance for people to light a candle and sign a book of condolence.

Westgate-on-Sea Town Council has a Book of Condolence at the office at St Mildred’s Road and will be open tomorrow from 10am until 1pm – then again on Monday from 10am until 12.30pm each day for the week.

St Saviour’s Church will be open from 10am to 5pm every day during the nation’s period of mourning for folk to sit quietly and/or sign the book of condolence. Floral tributes may be left in the memorial ground (to the left of the building as you go in the entrance from Westgate Bay Avenue). I appreciate it may be too late to include the special service we are having tomorrow (Sunday 11th) at 10.30am. It will be a service of commemoration, reflection and Holy Communion.

A book of condolence has been opened in the entrance to the building housing the Mayor and Charter Trustees of Margate: The Media Centre, 11-13 King Street, Margate CT9 1DA (entrance in Fort Road) The book will be available to sign Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm until 5pm on the day following the state funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II which is due to take place on September 19.

Children at Viking Academy Trust schools in Thanet have held  moments of quiet reflection today in memory of The Queen.

Girls and boys at Upton Juniors, Chilton Primary and Ramsgate Arts Primary took part in special assemblies where the life of the monarch was celebrated.

Books of memoriam have been opened at each school for pupils, families, staff and governors to sign if wished.

And as a mark of respect the logos on each school website have been transposed to monochrome for the national period of mourning.

In the coming weeks pupils will be celebrating the life and times of The Queen and the Royal family with creative writings and artwork.

Queen Elizabeth II paid many visits to Kent and Medway during her reign. They included .a tour of the Medway Towns in 1984; opening the QEII Bridge at Dartford in 1991; Margate and Ramsgate (photo below) in 1993 as part of a tour of East Kent; opening the Channel Tunnel in 1994: distributing Maundy money in Canterbury Cathedral in 2002.

She also visited Turner Contemporary in Margate in 2011; opened The Wing Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne in 2015; celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Corps of Royal Engineers at Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, in 2016, following previous visits there in 1968, 1987 and 2007: and celebrated the centenary of Royal British Legion Industries in Aylesford, in 2019.
