Ramsgate furniture store owner expands business to open fourth shop in Kent

A Ramsgate business owner has launched his fourth furniture shop with a new site opening in Canterbury today (July 29).

Jamie Kight, with his team of 11 staff, runs Kent Beds & Sofas. The dad-of-two founded the business, originally called Thanet Bedz, in 2011 with his first store in Ramsgate High Street.

In 2014 shop was opened in Folkestone and 2020 came another in Sittingbourne. The latest site is based at the Wincheap estate.

Jamie moved to Thanet in 2001 to be closer to then-girlfriend Hayley who he met while she was at university in Bournemouth in 1999. The couple celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this year.

Initially Jamie was manager for a furniture store in Wincheap and then moved to a showroom at Westwood.

The 46-year-old said: “I left in 2011 to open my own business. I’m super-impressed with how it has gone. I have got a great team of people who are just as passionate about the business as I am. Everyone from store managers to sales staff and delivery drivers are fantastic and I couldn’t do it without them.”

Jamie says the success is down to a focus on the business rather than what profits could buy.

He said: “My focus has always been expanding the business. A lot of people might be about getting a villa in Portugal or an expensive car but I am not materialistic at all.

“I want to grow the company and I would like to have shops all over Kent so am eyeing up Ashford, Maidstone, Medway. The difficulty is finding a suitable location. You need a shop that is big enough, the right location and the right price.”
