Remembrance services will be held across the isle on Sunday, November 10 for people to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.
Monday, November 11 is Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in the First World War at 11am in 1918, with Remembrance Sunday always the second Sunday in November.
World War One began on July 28, 1914, ignited by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The conflict lasted four years, three months and 14 days, ending on November 11, 1918.
Almost 7 million civilians and 10 million military personnel were killed during the conflict.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, World War One officially ended when an armistice was signed by Germany and the Allies.
Armistice Day is commemorated each year when people wear paper poppies to remember those who fought and died in conflicts around the world – the red flowers were the only life to flourish on the bloody battlefields of Western Europe.
It was hoped the Great War would be the conflict to end all wars. Just 21 years later World War Two broke out.
Thanet Remembrance services
Birchington
Meet at Alpha Road car park from 10.30am for the parade through the village to The Square for the wreath laying service at 11am. Following this will be the Remembrance Service at All Saints Church.
The Birchington Silver Band will attend.
Broadstairs
A service beginning at 10.45am at the War Memorial on the High Street and Pierremont Avenue
Margate
Town war memorial, Trinity Square, 10.48am.
The civic mayor’s procession along Northdown Road to the memorial followed by wreath laying
Ramsgate
Remembrance Day Parade and Service through the Town Centre to St. George’s Church, Church Hill, Parade from Elms Avenue at 10.35am, Service at 10.50am.
There will also be a service outside Timpsons shop in the centre of town, which includes hymns, a bugler, Vicar and a minute’s silence.
Monday, November 11 – wreath laying at Destiny in Albion Gardens at 8.30am and wreath laying and service at Ramsgate cemetery 10.50am
Chatham and Carendon Grammar School
There But Not There display at the school’s Chatham site library featuring Tommies sculptures bearing the names of the school’s fallen.
More than 95 former students lost their lives in the Second Wprld War. There will be articles and first hand accounts on display.
Sue Hurrell, from the grammar, said: “Last year Chatham Site Library became home to a number of silhouettes, the Tommies. They were installed to bring the names in our past out of the Book of Remembrance to sit amongst us to commemorate the Armistice Centenary of the First World War. In the half-light the silhouettes could not always be seen although when walking around the silent room they became clearer for a moment, or, out of the corner of your eye a glimpse of a head and shoulders appeared . I must admit it was slightly eerie.
“Anyone who has been in the Library at Chatham will understand that at 8pm on a dark evening, even amongst the books and art of today you can feel the age of the building; making you think about the people who have spent time in that wonderful room through the years. However, as I placed the names and the detai1s of the life and death of each of our fallen by a silhouette they took on their identity and whilst very sad to reflect on their short lives I found it very moving and a privilege.”

Newington primary school
Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Scouts are invited to wear their servive uniform to school on Monday, November 11 to
mark Remembrance Day.
Westgate
The parade leaves St Saviour’s Church for the War Memorial on the seafront at 11.45am.
After the service refreshments will be available at Christ Church United Reformed Church
Minster
A service organised by the Minster & Monkton Royal British Legion will take place on Sunday, October 10 with a parade to the village church leaving the club at approximately 10am .
After the service the club will host an afternoon of entertainment with a buffet and music from the Swingtime Sweethearts. All are welcome.
