Ramsgate burglar who stole from friend hours after she gave him food is jailed

Simon Elliot was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court

A burglar from Ramsgate who stole from someone just hours after they gave him food and drink has been jailed for more than two years.

On Saturday,February 16, Simon Elliott, 41, visited a woman known to him in Cliftonville Avenue, Ramsgate. They shared some food and drink and Elliott left.

After the woman went to bed that night, she was awoken by Elliott calling out at the front door. A few moments later the victim heard more noises, this time coming from inside her home.

When she got up to investigate, she found the front door open and her purse containing cash and cards missing. She realised that someone had got into the house through a window, moving a pot plant in the process, and then stolen from her.

Outside she found Elliott’s bags which she had seen him carrying earlier.

An investigation by Kent Police confirmed that Elliott’s fingerprints were found on the pot plant and he was arrested.

Elliot, of Clements Road in Ramsgate, pleaded guilty to the burglary and was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Thursday,August 1 to two years and four months (876 days) in prison.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Richard Cordery said: “Elliot’s offending is aggravated by the fact he chose to repay the kindness the victim showed to him by stealing her money and bank cards.

“His offending was mean-spirited and I hope he uses his time in prison to consider his actions.”

  1. The police statements after scumbags are jailed crack me up. “Use his time in prison to consider his actions”

    • Ann read Les Miserables – Víctor Hugo. Whilst feeling very sorry
for the victim – we cannot ignore the criminal. Otherwise he will offend again – I agree with the statement of the police – we cannot give up on people – if we do we are creating more crime victims in the future.

      • Well said Tricia, excellent recommendation, the sentence of the court is to deny the man of his liberty for 30 months, it is to be hoped that he takes advantage of education opportunities while in jail and is helped to reform to make a more worthwhile contribution to society when he is released.
