Book Buoy opens its doors in Margate Old Town

Baby Arlo 'on the staff' at Book Buoy

A snug new bookshop has opened in Margate’s Old Town.

Book Buoy,  in Hawley Street, is the result of former London cinema general manager Rob McCrae deciding to ditch his job and become the main carer for new baby Arlo.

Rob and girlfriend Gemma Cole, 30, had shared parental leave for four months. Now Gemma has returned to her role as a creative producer for a film company and Rob, 42, is looking after Arlo and running the new shop,

After many years of dreaming, the couple have finally made the move to Margate from London and followed Rob’s ambition of opening the shop.

He said: “We’ve opened the doors to our lovely pink shop. Readers of Thanet can expect a curated selection of books on offer – new releases, fiction, non-fiction, design, cult, classic art, design, art and kids.”

Each book is handpicked by Rob, with titles that are gateways into further reading, or to pique the interest of adventurous readers.

The project is a labour of love, and the pair hope it will provide a real-world sanctuary for beautiful books that so desperately need a place to exist outside the realms of internet shopping.
