Two Traveller groups in Palm Bay and Viking Adventure Playground are due to move on

Site visits were made today

Travellers who have stopped at Palm Bay and the Viking Adventure Playground in Clifonville will be leaving both sites this evening (June 14).

Staff from Thanet council’s community safety partnership have visited both groups this afternoon and carried out welfare checks.

A spokesman said: “There are no welfare issues of people on site and we have been advised that both groups will be moving on this evening.”

A report commissioned by Thanet council says the district should provide five Traveller pitches -to accommodate 10 caravans – in the five year period up to 2022 and then an additional two pitches – equating to four more caravans- by 2031.

The Thanet Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (GTAA) was carried out by consultants arc4 to identify the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers and Travelling Showpeople  from across Thanet.

It was discussed as part of the Local Plan examination.

There are currently no authorised pitches in Thanet district.

  1. Welfare reports?? Don’t make me laugh. I know it is regulatory but these itinerants have no welfare issues other than the ones they bring on themselves. It is about time the law was changed to enable them to be evicted from public land without notice and save us cpuncil tax payers thousands in legal costs and thousands in clearing their mess up afterwards. Leaving tonight? I’d lay money on them still being there in the morning and ones after that. Let’s hope they leave the hard work done by the Cliftonville group on the flower beds well alone along with the Victorian shelter.

    • Apparently, they left this evening just as they said they would. I will now have to eat my hat!????

    • They hardly use the legal sites as that is not what they want. They rather camp wherever they like. There is a sight in Canterbury, just up the road but it’s hardly used.

      • People can’t just go onto another caravan park the same way people can’t just walk into another persons house. If you ate talking about the council caravan park in Canterbury then a little research will inform there is a long waiting list for tenancy on the CP. But I suspect you already know this.

    • Good Lor..your comments belong to the Alf Garrnet days of mindless bigotory. Have you any police statistics to prove what you dribble? I’d guess not. Which implies you are no better then you come across in this day and age.

  2. Why pay your way in life when you can do whatever you want, get everything you want, take whatever you want and don’t do a thing towards it. We’re the idiots who do the right thing. Let’s hope they have gone by the morning. Good riddance.

    • Do you actually believe what you have posted? Please stop feeling like a victim of some sort and consider how lucky you are to have a base to call home

  3. Does that mean anyone can use a travelers site. If I get a caravan can I park it there and stay rent and rate free. If so put me down for one.

    • What a rather dim question! One would have thought you mention of Traveller site might have given you the answer to your own question! Rent and rate free? Ate Traveller sites such? Can tpu provide the name of any such site?

  4. I wonder how these people always get behind locked gates to get on the greens. There are barriers at both these sites and yet they get through, do they have their own keys.

I hope they haven’t left a mess behind at the viking Ship playground green as that is where we litter-picked recently.

    • Re: Your nom de plume. You do realise the people in question are also ‘Kent Residents’ Or is it your contention their ethnicity excludes them from that?

  5. Jed the Red. I guess that is your nom-de plume to avoid any sort of recognition. Are you a Traveller yourself by any chance. I’m sure I have seen similar feelings expressed on a FB site. When Travellers pay their fair way in society, income tax, council tax and a dozen other things of a similar nature, including paying for fuel at the top of Minster hill, or not as has recently happened, then you may, just may, have an arguable point. As for crime statistics, ask a policeman!
