Tesco Extra at Westwood is temporarily closed while repairs are carried out on the roof following damage by yesterday’s (March 10) high winds.
The store had to be evacuated during the morning when gusts ripped off a portion of the structure.
The superstore has confirmed that surplus food will be donated to local charities and groups through its Community Food Connection scheme.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “Following damage caused to the roof by high winds on Sunday, our Broadstairs Extra store is temporarily closed. We are currently carrying out urgent repair works to ensure the roof is secure so that we can reopen the store to customers as soon as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
The winds also brought down trees blocking roads and train lines and ripped down hoardings at the Pleasurama site in Ramsgate.
It also caused disruption with isle-wide power cuts and low pressure, or no water at some properties, due to the impact on the isle’s booster station.
