Plans have been drawn up to convert a former builders yard into a six-home development behind shops on Broadstairs high street.
The proposals, submitted to Thanet District Council by Suss Designs on behalf of developer Perry Gamby, involve converting vacant units into houses.
The site is accessed down the side of the RSPCA charity shop and sits behind a row of businesses, including the Prince Albert pub.
Mr Gamby plans to create two one-bedroom cottages and four two-bedroom homes.
He proposes to retain and convert the existing units and there will be space for just one car to park.
In the design and access statement submitted to the council, a spokesman for Suss Designs says the benefit of this is “the creation of a traffic-free, landscaped courtyard which provides amenity space for the residents in a unique calm oasis adjoining the High Street”.
“The applicant contends that the re-use of the existing structures, including the flint walls as proposed, will retain the character of the existing courtyard and will make a positive contribution to the development of the site and its adjacent environment,” the spokesman adds.
