Some 500 people visited Margate Made’s Christmas Makers’ event yesterday (November 24), held at the Adult Education centre in Hawley Square.

The attractions included 38 stalls run by local small artisan business owners, live music and free adult education tasters for belly-dancing, jewellery-making and textile decorations.

The free sand art, Christmas decorations, headband-making and rock painting tables were enjoyed by children and adults alike. They also got to see the inside of Margate’s education centre which was originally an art college. The stalls filled six of its rooms and the canteen.

Sarah Gibbon, one of the lead organisers, said: “This was only our second public event, and the recent cold and wet weather was a challenge whilst promoting it, but the atmosphere, numbers attending, engagement and sales reported by stallholders on the day were all wonderful. It was really great to see such a wide array of high quality creative work and tasty produce on display.

“It was a true celebration of creativity and community and we are so impressed that our local community is supporting the shop local ethos and Margate’s economy in this way. Huge thanks must also go to our volunteers and sponsors who work so hard behind the scenes and on the day.

“We are always on the look-out for more makers to join us, and new exhibition and selling venues in Thanet, so please do get in touch via our Facebook or Instagram groups if you would like to get involved and support us too.”

Many of the makers have attended Kent Adult Education’s creative and business courses – browse their online prospectus to learn more about their offerings, or pop in to talk to the teams in their centres across Thanet.
