In April, the Nice Things shop, specialising in all things handmade, moved from its tiny home on Ramsgate harbour to a bigger space in the beautifully renovated old Hinds building on Harbour Street.
Central to the plans for the space was to include a gallery area to showcase bold contemporary local work. Now the gallery is to launch its first exhibition – Winter Open Art.
The event opens tomorrow (December 13) with a wide collection of work from Thanet-based artists, showing a mix of paint, print, textiles and ceramics. It runs to January 10 and is open seven days a week, except between Christmas and New Year.
After looking through many great submissions, the artists selected are: Andrea Chappell; Andrew Robertson; Carol Lewis; Carole Sumray; Cathy Harvey; David Harvey; David Ridgway; Jan Gibbons; Janie Grout; Jennifer Welsford; John Bloomfield; Julian Lovegrove; Katrina Dallamore; Kylie Cederbad; Lesley Gray; Linda Trim; Liz McAuley; Makiko Downton; Margaret Foreman; Marian Padina; Martin Cheek; Mel Chennell; Mike Trim; Patricia Bentley; Robert Marsh; Sarah Stokes; Sharon Hendy; Stacey Chapman; Susie Darnton; Vic Woods; Vicki Salmi and Wendy Jones.
In the spirit of encouragement for enterprise, young artists who came forward and asked if they could be included will also be shown – including Alexandra McFarlane and Rory Sears.
A Meet The Artist evening will be held on Friday (December 15) from 6pm- 9pm. The gallery will be getting into the spirit of the season with mulled wine and mince pies all through that day, to welcome visitors and enjoy the exhibition.
Gallery and Nice Things owner Suzy Humphries said: “It’s the first big exhibition I’ve organised and it’s been a really wonderful way to discover new artists and new work. I hope lots of people come and we get some red dots for sales to cheer the artists for the festive season and support the gallery which is donating 10% of its proceeds to Ramsgate Arts.”
