A 2018 event is planned after success of debut Broadstairs Scrabble tournament

Scrabble enthusiasts will return to Broadstairs

The first Scrabble tournament to be hosted in Broadstairs was such a success that planning is already taking place for next year’s event.

The two-day event was organised by Broadstairs player Nicky Huitson, who also created the world’s biggest facebook page for fans of the game – Scrabble Snippetz. The page has more than 5,000 members.

Nicky, who works with people with learning difficulties, hosted the inaugural Broadstairs Seaside Special Scrabble Tournament at Holy Trinity Community Hall in Nelson Place last weekend.

Forty-two entrants from as far away as California, Germany, Ireland and  Poland came to battle it out by the sea.

Nicky, 55, said: “ A good time was had by all, and as everyone stayed in local hotels, Air B nBs and guest houses, local businesses also benefited from the influx of wordsmiths.

“ A number of us ate out at Taylor’s Fish restaurant on Friday, with one man who’d come down from Manchester declaring they served the best fish and chips he’d ever eaten and on Saturday 36 of us descended on Prezzo’s where we feasted to our hearts’ content whilst discussing moves of the day.”

Each entrant was welcomed with a stick of Broadstairs Rock from Suzanne’s  and registration photos were taken wearing Kiss me Quick hats to complete the theme.

The tournament runner up in Division E  was Gary Jones from Broadstairs, and it was his first ever tournament trophy.

Despite tough competition from some of the world’s best players, the overall winner was Brett Smitheram, the current World Champion, and in keeping with the seaside theme, he received a Seagull as his trophy.

Eighteen people are already signed up for the next event due to take place at the end of July 2018.

Nicky added: “People remarked on how beautiful Broadstairs was and how friendly the locals were. I was proud of the opportunity to showcase “my” town, whilst combining it with my favourite hobby.”
