Litter crackdown

Nineteen people have been brought before magistrates after failing to pay fines for littering on the isle.

Thanet council brought the prosecutions, which were heard at Canterbury Magistrates Court on December 5.

The authority is taking a zero tolerance approach in a bid to clampdown on members of the public dropping litter.

All 19 offenders received a fixed penalty notice from Thanet council as well as two warning letters after they had missed the payment deadline.

Cllr Lin Fairbrass,Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Environmental Services, said: “These prosecutions are a clear signal that littering is not acceptable. Our stance is firm – we will not tolerate this anti-social and criminal behaviour that blights our district.

“Those taken to court generally end up paying considerably more than the initial £80 fixed penalty. On average, they face combined fines and costs amounting to £350. On top of that, they end up with a criminal record.

“Our message is simple – people who are caught dropping their litter in Thanet will be made to face the consequences.”

  1. Are we living in Kent,England year 2017 or Nazi Germany in the 1930s/40s? Hundreds of pounds for people to pay who have been “proven guilty in their absence”- so,hardly a fair trial if the individual cannot spek in their own defence,a basic human right.
